Picture sudoku is sudoku with friendly animal faces instead of numbers, so even children who aren't reading numbers yet can play. The thinking is exactly the same as classic sudoku — every row, column and box needs each picture exactly once — but it feels like a game of matching and spotting. It's a lovely first puzzle for the very youngest solvers.
How picture sudoku works
The grid here is a 4×4 board split into four little boxes. There are four animals to place, and the one rule is simple: each row, each column and each little box should have all four animals, with no animal repeated. Tap an empty square, then tap the animal you want to drop in. Tap a square again to clear it and try a different one.
It's logic, not luck
Even without numbers, your child is doing real sudoku thinking. To fill a square, they look along its row and down its column to see which animals are already there — whatever's left is the one that fits. That's pattern-spotting and step-by-step reasoning, the same skills behind early maths, dressed up as a game about animals.
Who is it for?
Picture sudoku is made for pre-readers and early learners, roughly ages 4 to 7. Because it uses pictures instead of digits, there's no reading or counting needed to start — just looking and matching. When your child is comfortable here and ready for numbers, the 4×4 number grid is the natural next step, then 6×6 after that.
